Some Tips for Preventing Sports-Related Injuries in Children

Board certified by the American Academy of Pediatrics, James McEntire has more than 20 years of experience as a pediatrician. James McEntire counts sports medicine among his chief medical interests.

To reduce the chance of injury, it's important to educate kids and adolescents on safety before they participate in physically demanding activities such as sports. Here are some common best practices parents can use to protect young athletes.

1. Static and dynamic stretching helps the body prepare for movement. Static stretches are stretches that a person holds for a period, whereas dynamic stretches involve continuous movement, such as doing jumping jacks.
2. From fatigue to vomiting, heat-related illness are not pleasant. Keep young athletes hydrated by supplying lots of water and water bottles.
3. Just like stretching before exercise, staying rested after exercise protects the body. Make sure children have plenty of time to recoup both during and after physical activities.
4. Promote core strength. Maintaining core strength increases balance and support a wider range of athletic movements.
